JV3 Alternative solution

JV3 is an alternative solution to the traditional ‘Deemed-to-Satisfy’ (DTS) approach of Section J compliance for non-residential buildings. It is flexible, quantifiable and above all cost effective. In many cases, DTS solutions do not provide the best outcomes for a particular project.

The process of modelling the Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions of the NCC creates a ‘target’ for annual energy consumption. Once this has been determined, the building designers can manipulate the material specification and the requirement provided it does not use more energy than this reference ‘target’.

SOFTWARE WE USE

We use “Energy Plus” software for this calculation.  Energy Plus is an ABCB (Australian Building Codes Board) protocol approved analysis software. Our engineer has been using this software for more than 10 yrs and has the required training and qualification. Total annual energy use is estimated by entering the building details into building simulation software. The simulation software uses location and weather data to simulate the thermal performance of the building under certain conditions set out by the JV3 section of the NCC. In turn, this is used to estimate the amount of energy required to maintain the building’s temperature within an acceptable range for the occupants, along with the consumption of electricity for lighting and other building services.
