Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme is a regulatory framework that sets the national standards for building thermal assessment with software tools to rate the energy efficiency of dwellings in Australia.
NATHERS is a star rating system (out of ten) that rates the energy efficiency of a home, based on its design. It determines the house's ability to maintain a comfortable temperature year round. There are several software tools currently accepted under NatHERS scheme.
According to National Construction Code of Australia, a minimum standard for energy efficiency of new homes must be met in order to comply with the requirements of NCC. Achieving a certain NatHERS rating is one way to satisfy the requirements of NCC in this regard. Another method is to construct the house according to Deem-to-Satisfy provisions of NCC.

In NSW, BASIX regulations override the requirements of NCC for energy efficiency of new homes. BASIX online tool accepts NatHERS rating results when derived from accredited software tools. The Thermal Performance Assessment is carried out by suitably qualified assessors using the sophisticated computer model. The heating and cooling loads must be equal to or less than those set down by the Department of Planning and Infrastructure for your climate zone to be compliant with BASIX. |
